“Patience, time and respect,” may be the motto of Shorin-Ryu-Karate Schools, but later this month the statement will be heard at the “Get Active! Brevard” fitness showcase in Viera.
The event is a free family event is planned for children ages 5 to 12 to shape up and get physical while playing games like tug of war and soccer, but some also may have fun learning karate.
Shorin-Ryu-Karate Schools will offer free karate training sessions valued at $900, as well as manning a booth and demonstrating karate moves between noon and 2 p.m.
Space Coast Ueshiro Karate Schools are located in Cocoa Beach, Suntree, Cocoa, Viera and Merritt Island and are led by Hanshi Robert Scaglione, a 10th-degree black belt.
Ueshiro-Shorin-Ryu is the traditional form of Okinawan karate and primarily focuses on the practice of basic techniques while students learn the mental, philosophical and spiritual aspects.
School officials say they are excited to participate in “Get Active! Brevard” as the event will be held close to the founder of Shorin-Ryu karate’s Grand Master Ueshiro’s birthday April 20.
They said it’s a great way to honor him for bringing the martial art from Okinawa.
The karate school also has been active in performing at other community events.
They performed demonstrations at the United Methodist Church Spring Fling in 2005, as well as being involved in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walkathon in 2006.
The Brevard Healthcare Forum and Brevard County Parks and Recreation will co-host the “Get Active! Brevard” event in an effort to address childhood obesity across the Space Coast.
Up to 1,500 parents and children are expected to attend the event.
“Get Active! Brevard” is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 26 at the community center and outdoor fields at Viera Regional Park.
