"The way of karate can be followed by anyone -- man, woman or child -- and through karate training one can attain the highest ideals of beauty and strength. This beauty and strength is both inner and outer, mental and physical." (O'Sensei Shoshin Nagamine)
Welcome to the Cocoa Beach Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo where traditional and authentic Matsubayashi-Ryu (Shorin-Ryu) Karate is practiced. Cocoa Beach Shorin-Ryu Karate, was founded in January 2003 by Sensei Des Chaskelson, and is a member of the World Matsubayashi-Ryu (Shorin-Ryu) Karate-Do Association (WMKA) headquartered in Naha, Okinawa, with branches throughout the world.
O'Sensei Shoshin Nagamine (1907--1997) founded the art of Matsubayashi-Ryu in 1947 and the WMKA was established by him to preserve and perpetuate the art. It has branches throughout the world. Currently the WMKA is under the direction of Soke Takayoshi Nagamine, 10th Dan Hanshisei, son of the founder of the style, who has dedicated himself to preserving the teachings and the legacy of Matsubayashi-Ryu.
Classes at Cocoa Beach Shorin-Ryu Karate are taught by school director, Sensei Des Chaskelson, 4th dan black belt and Chief Instructor, Sensei Tom DuJardin, 3rd dan black belt, assisted by Joe Motro, first dan black belt.
Classes are held as follows:
We welcome children (aged 7 and up) and adults, beginners as well as those who have had some prior martial arts training. We also have many families learning karate together (family discounts apply).
Karate teaches kids focus and discipline and provides adults with a way to stay fit -- and teaches all the ancient art of self defence.
Monthly rates are $35 per student, with significant family discounts and no contracts required. You will also need a uniform ($25) which we provide if needed, and school patch ($7).
