August 28, 2010 -- Sensei Terry Berman Karate Seminar

Arigato to Sensei Terry Berman, with over thirty years of Matsubayashi-Ryu (Shorin-Ryu) Karate, for visiting Cocoa Beach Shorin-Ryu Karate Dojo (CBH&F location) today with several of his students and conducting and sharing some karate knowledge with us.

Sensei Berman focussed on how to find and use the hip in all moves, using kata Fukyugata Ich, Ni and Pinan Shodan as examples. Tips included: use of foot placement, saving the hip, using the hip in high to low stances and vice versa, trapping the incoming punch n Pinan Shodan followed by the quick short punch to the ribs (using hip of course). Sensei also showed us seven new Yakasoku Kumite forms and we spent a good hour or so on learning these moves and techniques. The seminar ended with Sensei Berman and his black belt student Jim Centore, demonstrating the three advanced Yakaosku Kumite forms, simulating a fight with multiple attacks and defensive moves. Arigato again to Sense Terry and his students for sharing and training with us today.

Those Cocoa beach students who were able to show up learned much: Sensei Tom DuJardin, Jean Chipman, Stu Warren, Gannon Avery, Nick Davidson, Sue Hall, Michael Hall, Hunter McCarthy and John McCarthy. Between all of us, we hope to be able to reconstruct the new Yakasoku Kumite forms and incorporate them into our training. For those unable to make it this time, show up for classes and we will pass on some of the knowledge we picked up today. We all keep learning and moving forward!

Zen Shin,
Sensei Des Chaskelson
