Cocoa Beach Shorin-Ryu Karate School is in the process of becoming a member of the World Matsubayashi Ryu (Shorin-Ryu) Karate-Do Association, directly under Master Takayoshi Nagamine, the son of the founder of this style, Grand Master Shoshin Nagamine, and author of our textbook, The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do.
The art of Matsubayashi-Ryu was founded in 1947 by Osensei (Grand Master) Shoshin Nagamine (1907--1997), The WMKA was established by him to preserve and perpetuate the art. It has branches throughout the world. We in Cocoa Beach are honored and excited at the prospect of being directly connected to the source of this style of karate-do.
More information about the WMKA can be found online at: http://www.matsubayashi-ryu.com/
All twelve Cocoa Beach black belts and brown belts are on board with the new affiliation with Master Nagamine in Okinawa. Classes here will continue as usual, with the addition of special seminars and training sessions.
All students (adults and children) will need to obtain an annually renewable membership card from Okinawa, at the cost of $25 per student. However, testing fees are reduced for: Yan Kyu $30 (from $60); San-kyu $35 (from $40); Ni-kyu $40 (from $80). All other testing fees remain the same.
We plan on expanding our knowledge and training by training with other practitioners of this style. To this end, On March 20, we have been invited to attend a karate seminar (1pm to 4pm) in Cocoa to be conducted by the head of the North American Matsubayashi Karate Association, Kyoshi' Don Caponigro (see bio at end of this email). This seminar is open to all ranks.
In addition, also in March we will be holding a seminar in Cocoa Beach, to be led by Sensei Peter Van Westering, one of my first Senseis in NYC, and Shihan of Rising Sun Dojo (http://www.dojorisingsun.com) on the applications of kata moves and also on the nunchaku. This seminar is open to Ni-kyu and above only.
We will be holding various seminars and special training from time to time as our instructors are exposed to different ideas and training methods and applications.
This is very exciting news and we, the black belts and brown belts, are all excited by the new possibilities that are open to us in our karate training. I will answer any specific questions you might have at class tomorrow night or feel free to email or call me anytime. Looking forward to moving forward, Zen-Shin.

A black belt is just a white belt who never quit
Kyoshi Caponigro has been training in for 44 years and teaching for 32 years. For the last 17 years Kyoshi has conducted clinics and seminars around the country for Matsubayashi-Ryu dojos and associations as well as other styles of karate and various Police departments. As a result of these clinics, Kyoshi observed the lack of quality instruction and training the students and instructors were receiving and decided to establish a place where quality instruction, philosophy, and traditional Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do can be taught and where good hard training and studying is the backbone.
