As a result of the recent Florida Today press article, we have been contacted by the Brevard Healthcare Forum and Brevard Parks and Recreation Department who are co-sponsoring a “Get Active” seminar and fair on Saturday April 26th at Viera Parks and Recreation Center targeted at kids and their parents. We have been invited to become a sponsor of the event along with other notable sponsors including: American Heart Association, Brevard County Health Department, Children’s Medical Services, Circles of Care, Coastal Health Systems, Cumulus Broadcasting, Florida Institute of Technology, Health First, Incredible Edibles, National Health Review magazine, and others.
Our sponsorship will include free training valued at $900, as well as manning a booth and performing karate demos and instruction between 12pm and 2pm. This is a great opportunity for Space Coast Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate to be of service to the community and also to garner some promotion for our schools, in particular Hanshi’s location in Viera. We will post more information closer to the event time but in the meantime, all Space Coast deshi are asked to block out the time on April 26th to participate.
The event also occurs around Grand Master Ueshiro’s birthday on April 20th and this is a great way to honor our founder – by being of service to the community and prorogating the art which he brought to us from Okinawa. For those of you in the Space Coast who are not familiar with Grand Master Ueshiro’s history, you can view “the History of Shorin-Ryu Karate USA” online at http://www.cocoabeachkarate.com/history.html as well as a NY Newsday article on his passing at: http://www.cocoabeachkarate.com/aunewsday.html
The event also marks the fifth anniversary of the founding of our Cocoa Beach Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate School in March of 2003 – again, for those of you unfamiliar with our history, you can view the Florida Today article on Hanshi and our founding online at http://www.cocoabeachkarate.com/fltoday.html. Also a great way for us in Cocoa Beach to celebrate five years and counting.
Our space coast Ueshiro karate schools have been active in performing community service on other occasions, including: October 2007 the Suntree school supported a large function at the Melbourne Brevard Community College, involving a walkathon for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (http://www.suntreekarate.com/ photos); May 2006, Cocoa Beach school performed karate demos for the local girl scouts group (http://www.cocoabeachkarate.com/ftmay06.html); and in April 2005 the Cocoa Beach school performed demos at the United Methodist Church Spring Fling (http://www.cocoabeachkarate.com/fltoday405.html).
Once again we have an opportunity to be of service to the community and to propagate our sacred art, as given to us by Grand Master Ueshiro and as kept alive today by Hanshi Scaglione. Be part of the history -- keep Saturday April 26th open between around 11am and 2.30pm for this event!
