Hanshi also emphasized the importance of Memorial Day in the context of our Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Okinawan heritage and encouraged all to read the “Memorial Day – Okinawan Interpretations” article written by Hanshi and Sensei Matt Kaplan and published in the Newsletter of Shorin-Ryu Karate U.S.A in the summer of 1990 (the article was sent to all deshi by Sensei Kaplan yesterday). The article concludes that: “It is our opinion that in one’s attempts to learn the physical and spiritual aspects of our karate training it is also necessary to become aware and respectful of the cultural and historical roots of the gem (Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate) we have inherited.”
