February 22, 2008: Hanshi & Kyoshi Seeger at Boom

Tonight (Friday Feb 22nd, 2008) the Cocoa Beach Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate School was honored to have Hanshi Scaglione and Kyoshi Seeger as guest instructors, kicking off the special Karate Weekend Winter Retreat. About thirty students turned out for this great workout and special instruction at the highest level. In addition to our Cocoa Beach students we had two students from New York including black belts Richie Glassman and former NYC and now FL resident, Carmelo Aleman. We also had several students form our sister dojo in Cocoa and Suntree in attendance.

It should be noted that Kyoshi Seeger, Richie Glassman and the other green belt from NYC showed up in spite of the snow storms hitting the NYC area -- showing true Shorin-Ryu karate spirit of moving forward in spite of everything.

Everyone that turned up was treated to a very special class. Hanshi began the class and then turned it over to Kyoshi Seeger, visiting from New York as part of the special karate weekend. Kyoshi Seeger showed us some of the “secrets” of out style, focusing on “rubbing elbows” with opponents, using mia to close the distance and getting in close, firing out the techniques with speed and agility like firing the nuchaku rather than trying to “muscle” the technique. And most especially, using our unique Fukyugata San kata given to us by Grand Master Ueshiro as a fighting kata. For those of us that were lucky enough to attend the class we had our karate training “kicked up a notch” by Kyoshi Seeger

While Hanshi graciously took a back seat and let Kyoshi Seeger run the class, Hanshi was there to remind us of the basics, “step first and then punch”; use both hands / elbows when executing a technique, do not rush and blur the techniques.

Domo Arigato to Hanshi and Kyoshi Seeger for this great class -- a great way to kick off our special karate weekend. We look forward to more at Hanshi’s special four hour karate workout and seminar tomorrow.
