Karate Class Registration and Fees

  • $30 per month; family rates: $25 per month per member for two members and $20 per month per member for three or more.

    Ranks and Testing Requirements (for all SRKUSA Dojos)

    White belt - Green Stripes; One Green Tip (Ro-kyu); Two Green Tips (Go-kyu)

  • Proper courtesy
  • Permission from assigned black belt.
  • Membership paid in full
  • Short, typewritten essay on Kara te
  • Shorin-Ryu patch on gi
  • Basic Techniques: high bock (jodan uke), chest block (chudun uke), low block forward leaning stance (zenkutsu dachi gedan barai uke); front snap kick (mae geri); walking punch (chudan zuki); side-squat punch (oi zuki)
  • 10 Pushups (men), 5 Pushups (women)
  • 10 punches, squatting position
  • Fukyugata Ichi (Ro Kyu), Fukyugata Ni (Go Kyu)
  • $10 fee for Green Stripes; $10 fee for Ro-Kyu; $20 fee for Go-Kyu

    Yellow Belt (Children's Rank)

  • Minimum of 6 months training
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Yakusoku kumite 1
  • $25 cash fee

    Green Belt (Yon Kyu) and Brown Tips (San-Kyu)

  • Proper Courtesy
  • Permission from assigned black belt
  • Sponsorship from your black belt sempai
  • Membership paid in full
  • Short, type written essay on Karate
  • Minimum of 2 classes per week
  • All Kata for your level
  • All Yakusoku kumite for your level
  • Special Training Exercise, Oyotanren
  • Breaking technique
  • Help with dojo upkeep
  • Help lower ranks by training vigorously in each class, answering their questions and assisting in their training both before and after class

    These are the minimum requirements to be considered for promotion. You will then be evaluated on the day of promotion.

    In addition, the following requirements are specific to each rank.

    Green Belt (Yon-Kyu)

  • Minimum of 6 months training
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Special Training Exercise, Oyotanren
  • Yakusoku kumite 1
  • $60 cash fee

    Brown Tips (San-Kyu)

  • Minimum of 6 months training as Yon Kyu
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Pinan 1-2
  • Yakusoku kumite 1-2
  • Attend dojo functions (doshokai, holiday workouts, cleanups, etc.)
  • $30 cash fee

    Orange Belt (Children's Rank)

  • Recommended minimum of 12 months training as San Kyu
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Pinan 1-4
  • Yakusoku kumite 1-2
  • Attend dojo functions (doshokai, holiday workouts, cleanups, etc.)
  • Display teaching skills
  • $35 cash fee

    Brown Belt (Ni-Kyu)

  • Recommended minimum of 12 months training as San Kyu
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Pinan 1-5
  • Yakusoku kumite 1-3
  • Attend dojo functions (doshokai, holiday workouts, cleanups, etc.)
  • Display teaching skills
  • $80 cash fee

    Black Tips (Ik-kyu)

  • Minimum of 12 months training as Ni Kyu
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Pinan 1-5
  • Naihanchi 1
  • Yakusoku kumite 1-3
  • Attend dojo functions (doshokai, holiday workouts, cleanups, etc.)
  • Display teaching skills
  • Display controlled fighting skills
  • $40 cash fee

    Black Belt (Sho-Dan)

  • Minimum of 12 months training as Ik Kyu
  • Fukyugata 1-3
  • Pinan 1-5
  • Naihanchi 1-3
  • Ananku
  • Wankan
  • Yakusoku kumite 1-4
  • Attend dojo functions (doshokai, holiday workouts, cleanups, etc.)
  • Display teaching skills
  • Display controlled fighting skills
  • $200 cash fee

    Any exception to the length of time necessary for the above ranks is at the discretion of the Shihan. All other prerequisites are at the discretion of Hanshi.

    Kata For Dan Level

  • For Sho Dan promotion: All Fukyugata, Pinan, Nihanchi, plus Ananku, Wankan, and weapon.
  • For Ni Dan: All of the above, plus Rohai and Wanshu.
  • For San Dan: All of the above, plus Passai.
  • For Yon Dan: All of the above, plus Chinto.
  • After Chinto comes Gojushiho and then Kusanku.

    Kata Learning Sequence For Dan Level

  • Rohai is started a couple months after the Sho-Dan test.
  • Wanshu is started approximately 1 - 2 years after Rohai.
  • Passai is started approximately 1 - 2 years after Wanshu.
  • Chinto is started approximately 2 - 3 years after Passai.
  • Gojushiho is started approximately 3 years after Chinto.
  • Kusanku is started approximately 3 years after Gojushiho.

    Black Belt Rules

  • All Black Belt testing will be at the discretion of Hanshi.
  • Deshi must train for a minimum of three years before being considered for Sho Dan. Dan level deshi must hold their rank for at least two years before testing for the next Dan rank. Recommendations for Dan promotion will be made by the deshi?s Shihan. The fee for all Dan level testing is $200.
  • . To remain a member in good standing, attendance at Black Belt workouts is mandatory. Shihan must be notified in advance in the event of a planned absence. Two consecutive unapproved absences from Black Belt workouts will result in suspension. Reinstatement following suspension or resignation requires: a formal letter requesting reinstatement; one year?s tuition paid in full; plus approval of Hanshi and the individual?s Shihan.
  • There will be a meeting of the Black Belts on the first Sunday in December each year.
  • To open and operate a dojo, a deshi must hold the rank of San Dan or higher. Approval to open and operate a dojo or club must be received from Hanshi. In addition, a license to open and operate a dojo or club will be granted for a one-time fee of $1,000. A Shihan may operate only one dojo.
  • A deshi under the rank of San Dan may be given approval to operate a dojo or club at the discretion of Hanshi and the Shihan. His Shihan or a San Dan will sponsor and supervise the operation of the dojo or club.
  • Dojo must be at least ten miles apart from each other unless they are located in a major city.
