No matter what activity a student may pursue, the key to success usually involves practice, practice and even more practice.

With that maxim in mind, more than 70 Brevard County Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu karate students participated in a testing and promotion event on Feb. 17 to show instructors how much they have mastered.

Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu has five schools across the Space Coast — Cocoa Beach, Suntree, Cocoa, Viera and Merritt Island — and is led by Hanshi Robert Scaglione, a 10th degree black belt.

Scaglione, a Viera resident, also directs 22 Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu karate schools worldwide. He learned the discipline from Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro of Okinawa, who foudned the Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu progranm in 1962.

Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu is a traditional form of Okinawan karate for all ages, and relies heavily on the practice of basic techniques.Students also learn about the mental, philosophical and spiritual aspects of karate.
