Ik-Kyu: Irv Seidman; Colleen Filler; Dmitre Robbins

Special thanks to the deshi who did not test and displayed remarkable unselfishness by supporting those who were testing. In all, thirty deshi participated in the Rank Promotion.
In martial arts it is often discussed that we should not rest on our laurels of reaching the next level, but to continue on in our quest for perfection and self understanding. ("If your opponent is training ten times, then you must train one hundred".) May you enjoy your new kata, while not leaving behind those you know so well.

I am proud to announce that today Monday, February 27, 2006 I held the first ever Karate “choice” (an elective) at PS/MS 27. I had 12 students on the deck doing Shorin-Ryu USA Karate. I will have these same students three times a week for “choice” on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10:20-11:20. The students are 7th and 8th graders who are interested in learning Karate. This choice cycle will run for six weeks. Once we are up and running I will inquire about the possibility of having guest visitors to our dojo. I am really excited about having this opportunity to teach Karate in the public school system during the school day.

Onegai-shimasu to All,
Shorin-ryu karate is alive and thriving in Northern Virginia. We held our February Kyu testing on the 25th with a large number of deshi moving into new ranks. The influx of new deshi over the last year is now strengthening our Yon-kyu backbone. Sensei Sal conducted the workout and testing and the photo we’ve included was taken immediately following the event. We will also be holding a local Dan level promotion in the next few days.
We are located in Virginia but feel a strong affinity with all members of our system. It was a joy to see many of them in Cocoa Beach this month. It was also a joy to be exposed to the wisdom of Hanshi, Kyoshi Baker and all the seniors present both on and off the deck. Domo Arigato to all of you.
Some of us began or spent portions of our training in New York City. We are looking forward to future opportunities to train in our Hombu dojo at its new location. It is always nice to receive the emails summarizing what Hanshi has covered when conducting classes during his travels. It is easy to picture him saying the words and demonstrating the techniques. Whenever possible, it is even nicer to be there in person. We look forward to more of that in the future.
Our classes continue to be held at a community center in Centerville with one class weekly being held at a community center in Reston. The same deshi attend classes at both locations.
There has already been much discussion and excitement here as we start doing research into facilities and sites for the 45th anniversary training in Virginia. We’ve experienced such wonderful training events at other dojo and are looking forward to the opportunity to reciprocate.
Domo Arigato.

Greetings from central Pennsylvania! We continue to move forward as a group.
On Sunday, February 19, 2006, we held our largest karate belt test to date. It was quite a milestone for us -- as individuals, karate families, and as a club. Here are the results from the test:
New Yellow belts (junior Green belts): Alex Pellas; Michael Hanold; Noum Feinberg;
Jefferey Cao; Kevin Liang; Noah Beattie-Moss
New Green belts:
Phillip Hanold;
Talia Feinberg;
Ian Pierce;
John Hanold;
Anne Moss;
Lynn Pellas;
Lihong Huan;
Lie-Ken Lee;
Susie Sulami;
Mark Feinberg;
New Brown Tips:
James Pletcher ;
John Pierce
And a big thanks to Ruilong Ma, Tracy Pletcher, and Jeffrey Ma for assisting with the judging of the test. Thanks also to Patrick Zhao, Noah Kaplan, and Michael Ma for helping out before and during the test.
We continue to train in a facility which is now a massage school, but was originally built as a state police barracks. The shoes off policy of the building and the health and wellness orientation of all who enter the building suit us quite nicely.

Downtown Karate Dojo
Aloha from Hawaii,
2006 started off with great spirit at the Downtown Karate Dojo. Workouts have been highly spirited and filled with energy that encompasses what Shorin Ryu Karate is all about.
This past February 21, 2006, we welcomed to deshi to their new ranks. We congratulate Roi Globen for all his hard training to successfully pass his test for Green Belt(yon-kyu). We also congratulate Brent Takara for a great display of technique and successfully passing his test for Brown tips(san-kyu)
We continue to look forward to this level of training throughout 2006 to only grow stronger each class.
We conduct classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30pm-7:00pm. For a limited time we are running a great "buddy special" where two individuals can sign up for the price of one (valid on all 6 month and 1 year memberships). We hope this will help increase our deshi count for 2006.
I wish all Directors and Deshi a very high spirited 2006. May we all continue to move forward in our strong spirit of Traditional Okinawan Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu.
Domo Arigato Hanshi for your guidance throughout the years! We all look forward to the training that you continue to offer us tomorrow and the next days to come.

Greetings Hanshi and All Memebers of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate U.S.A.
We have had many changes in our system this past year and that is a good thing.
We prosper with change.
We here at the Bushi Dojo, also will be making some changes.
My Fiancee’ and I will be re-locating for an indefinite time, to The Pocono Mountains,
in Pennsylvania. We have invested in a family Business which entailed buying The Mount Airy Lodge & Resort, and we have applied for one of the Fourteen Casino License that will be awarded by the State. We will then move into The Casino-Resort Business. Right now we are needed their most, for hearings, meetings, review boards etc.
The Bushi dojo will continue to operate under my Co-Shihan, Sensei Karen Brophy, I will be back and forth from Pa to Ca, with my acting career etc.
If our Pocono business goes to the next phase, I will immediately open The Ueshiro Shorin Ryu Karate Camp.
We acquired 1,000 acres and look forward to renovating a very large horse barn into a large wooden deck arena. Think about The 50th Anniversary, at The Resort in The Pocono’s!!!
*I also plan on supporting Sensei Mackay in his drive to re-mount a dojo on the island of Manhattan. We are 90 minutes from NYC and look forward to driving into the city and banging it out.
I wish to Thank the Bushi Dojo deshi from 1992 to 2006, you know you know who you are!
We will keep The West Coast Gates Open for all to visit and train .
Arigato Hanshi, what a great ride it has been so far, look forward to The Joy and The Vigor of the future.

Ueshiro Cocoa Beach Karate School
The past year has been an exciting one for all of us at the Ueshiro Cocoa Beach Karate school. In May last year we established a partnership with the city of Cocoa Beach and switched locations to the Cocoa Beach Recreation Center. In the summer, we ran karate classes as part of the city’s summer camp for kids which was very successful.
In early February this year, we hosted a special workout with the visiting brown and black belts and our central Florida students which was awesome! We had over eighty Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu deshi doing kata, filling up a full sized basketball court.
We have also held several joint workouts – beach workout and end of year workout – with our sister school at the Cocoa YMCA which were very well attended and filled with the trademark Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu “joy and vigor!”
Congratulations to Sensei Kurt Tezel, Chief Instructor who was promoted from Ni-Dan; to Ms. Connie Rutkowski promoted to Ni-Dan and Ms. Carla Eddy promoted to Sho-Dan.
We held our February 2006 belt testing on Sunday 26th at the Cocoa Beach Recreation Center.
A total of 26 students participated, including those students testing, as well as those showing up to support the event.
The board of judges for the testing included the following black belts: Co-Shihan of the Cocoa YMCA Dojo, Sensei David Tamir; Shihan of Cocoa Beach Dojo, Sensei Des Chaskelson; Chief Instructor Sensei Kurt Tezel; and black belt instructors Ms. Connie Rutkowski; Mr. Joe Motro and Ms. Carla Eddy.
Students who were not testing but showed up to lend support included: Trevor Tezel, Ik-kyu; Sheila Gagne, Ni-kyu; and JD McCormack, Ni-Kyu.
The following students tested and were promoted to the rank of:
Green Stripes (children’s rank): Alexandra Bulla, Latham Kellum Jnr.
Ro-Kyu (one green tip): Michael Adams, Christophe Bulla, and Latham Kellum Snr.
Yellow Belt (children’s rank): Nick French, Trey Arnold
Yon-Kyu (green belt): Tricia Tezel, Chris Minnis, Jim McCall; Joshua Adams, Kevin Tezel, Meghan Tezel, Sarah Parker and Wade Parker
San-Kyu (brown tips): Danny Parker
Orange Belt (children’s rank): Clay Tezel
Ik-Kyu (black tips): Julio Caballero
In March Trevor Tezel will be testing for Sho-Dan.

Participated in a black belt review hosted by the Cocoa Beach Dojo resulting in the promotion of three new nidans and four new shodans.
Conducted our February promotion amidst a record-breaking snow storm, with 11 deshi advancing to the next rank.
Transferred management of the Hombu dojo from Kyoshi David Baker, Shihan of record for nearly 20 years, to the new Ueshiro Midtown Karate Dojo, Inc., headed by Sensei Mackay, Reymond, Lott and Garcia.

Ueshiro Cocoa YMCA Dojo
The Ueshiro Cocoa YMCA Dojo is having lots of “Joy and Vigor” with over 40 active deshi. Our deshi are approximately half adults and half under 18. Our deshi have come a long way on the path of Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do . It shows in their Kata. We have just promoted 6 deshi to Yon-kyu (greenbelt) and 8 deshi to San-kyu (brown tips). Our approximately 2 year old dojo’s foundation is getting rooted deeper.
Our dojo had the honor, along with our sister dojo in Cocoa Beach, to host the recent organization-wide Black Belt training and review led by Hanshi (first weekend in February). Senior deshi from dojo[s] spanning California to Massachusetts to New York to Virginia visited our dojo for a Friday evening spirited workout, followed by Hanshi’s special workout on Saturday with almost 100 on the deck of the Cocoa Beach dojo, followed by Black Belt testing all day Sunday back at our dojo. Some of the visitors also squeezed in a wet vigorous workout under the leadership of Sensei Mackay at the beach in the face of blowing wind, rain, and crashing waves. This weekend of special training was enlightening to our deshi , who were impressed by the cohesive consistency of our organization’s quality enforced by Hanshi Scaglione, Kyoshi, and Sensei.
Our dojo recently received permission and assistance from the YMCA to setup a Shinden-wall with our class information, symbols, flags, and photos of our Shinden, Hanshi, and Sensei. This was not simple since we share the facility with other YMCA classes and the Brevard Community College. The YMCA continues to demonstrate their commitment to our dojo as they see our dedication and success in attracting and advancing students on the path of Karate-Do. .
For more information on our dojo, please visit our new web site at www.cocoadojo.com. We are grateful to our Sempai Gavin Gillette for being an outstanding web master and for his dedication to both a beautiful website and his ongoing karate training. Sempai Gillette is also beginning to support Sensei Joe Knight in upgrading our organization-wide web site. Our www.shorinryu.com will soon have a new look and feel to be reviewed and approved by Hanshi and Shihan.
We look forward to sharing Joy and Vigor with all of you next year at Ueshiro SRKUSA’s 45th anniversary in Washington D.C.
